What does it mean to “be Reiki”?

u_r_reiki on TwitterI was so thrilled to learn yesterday that I’ve reached over 1,000 followers on Twitter. I know for some people this is a small number of followers, but for me, this is a real milestone. At the beginning of the year, I thought I would reach this benchmark mid-year at the earliest. So not only did I achieve the goal, but I did so ahead of schedule! The project manager in me loves this!

If you follow me on Twitter, you know my handle is u_r_reiki. I chose this because some of the others which I wanted were already taken and it was based on a custom license plate that I was considering at the time. It also encompasses for me one of the important aspects of my Reiki practice.

So, what does it mean to “be Reiki”? For me, it means that you are universal life-force energy. You are love and light. It also means that you are not your body, thoughts, or emotions — your essence is something much larger. When we practice Reiki, either through self-practice, receiving or offering a treatment, or teaching, we have the opportunity to experience our essence. When we do this we notice, that we are, and are part of, something much larger than our embodied, temporal selves.

This knowledge provides the Reiki practitioner with a certain existential freedom that also carries a moral responsibility to others, ourselves, and the universe. We know that we are love and light. With this information we are informed about how to act and the best choices to make in our lives. We know that acting from a place of love and light is the right path at all times. This doesn’t mean being a doormat, but it does mean that we test our actions against the rule of love. Is this a loving act? Does it promote the highest good for those involved?

The intellectual and intuitive knowing of our essence as being more than just bodies and minds, frees us to live an authentic and loving life. It frees us from the fear of death and allows for greater connection to each other here in our earthly existence.

So next time you are faced with the question, “Who am I?” please know in your heart and mind that you are Reiki. You are love and light.

If you’re on Twitter, I hope you’ll join the fun and follow @u_r_reiki!
